Grief Counseling

Presented by Alan Saum, Pathways Volunteer Hospice

Children grieve differently than adults, but they experience the sadness, anger, guilt, physical symptoms, spiritual questions, and social isolation that come with grief. School staff has an incredibly important role in the lives of bereaved children and teens. In this workshop participants will develop an understanding of “what is grief”, learn the difference between grief and depression, explore ways to support a student in grief (K-12), and what to do when responding to a crisis.

Alan Saum, MSW has counseled at-risk and grieving people in Southern California for over a decade. He is the Bereavement Coordinator for Pathways Volunteer Hospice in Lakewood, overseeing their school-based grief program, crisis response team, and community grief support/education programs. He graduated from Fresno State Social Work (BA) and received a Masters in Social Work from CSULB.
